World
Series of Poker T+31 10K Day 1
Well,
I'm still in, I achieved my goal which
was to make the dinner break as we then
get a free buffet. It turned out that
I was nervous, for the first time here
I woke up in the middle of the night,
and for the first hour of play I was scared
to play anything. One big problem was
that with 25-50 blinds and 10K in chips
you couldn't just bet 200 and win the
blinds as 200 wasn't even a blip out of
10K, so it took me a while to get a feel
of what it took to bet a hand.
I only have 9950, I think average is about
16000 with 370 left out of 631, tomorrow
it's the same 150-300 blinds but with
a 25 ante. I got a nice bonus as the clock
counted down the last 2 minutes, I was
next up in the big blind, but the current
big blind took a full two minutes of think
time, no doubt so that he could avoid
being the small blind, that's pretty naughty
but nobody at the table (especially me,
tee hee) seemed to care as we were all
busy filling out out seat cards (tonight
they collect up all of our chips and we
get new seat assignments tomorrow, so
missing the big blind was quite advantageous).
I
had a really soft table but didn't make
nearly enough moves to take advantage
of it. I got up to a great 18000 before
dinner, then blew off 5000 with two dumb
moves. On one of them I raised from the
button and got reraised by AJ in the BB,
and like an idiot I called. He missed
the Kxx,K,x board, checked all the way
and I never bet, that was bad, I should
have bet the turn at least, certainly
the river. On the other I called a raise
with A5 in the BB, then check-raised the
Axx flop, then bet the Ten turn, but he
had AT and reraised, so I lost 4K on that
mess where I shouldn't even have been
there.
I
also got very lucky, almost went down
to 2K, when I limped on the button with
K3o because there were 4 limpers (a lot
of limping at this table). Flop was KK9
two suits, there was only one aggressive
player at the table, he bet from the BB,
the guy next to him just called, and I
moved all-in. The aggressive player folded
as I expected, but the other guy thought
for a while then called with K8, aiyah.
I got lucky when an Ace came on the river
to chop the pot. I never put him on the
K because I thought he would have been
sure to raise, so I figured he was on
the flush draw or a 9 (this guy loved
to call with bad hands). I got very few
big hands, although I had AA three times
but almost no action on any of them, the
only other hands were TT, 55, 88, 44,
AK, AQ, AQ and that was it. For the last
hour I had absolutely nothing, and no
opportunities to steal either, so dwindled
down to 10K. Tomorrow I will need to get
busy! I made most of my money with A5s
when I hit the flush on the turn and got
a lot of action.
As
you've heard, a lot of big names are already
out. Kathy Liebert had a terrible beat
when she went all in with a flopped set,
got called by A8 (8 high flop) and he
hit runner runner flush. Diego got pretty
low but made a great comeback and now
has 18K. Johnny Chan looks like he has
a lot of chips, as does Ram Vaswani (he
may be chip leader).
I
can now confirm that I have no idea who
'poker reporter' is, it wasn't who I thought
it was - so, if you're reading this, I
promise to keep it secret if you tell
me who you are (e-mail or come and talk
to me).
I
heard rumors of dealer unrest this morning
and that they had a staff meeting, I also
heard rumors of how it was resolved, I
hope someone else can confirm what I think
I know.
So,
tomorrow I continue my incredible journey,
but now I have to start playing like I
mean it if I am going to be a contender,
so tomorrow night I'm either going to
be reporting that I'm in with decent chips,
or if I don't catch any cards you'll be
hearing my sad story of how I made a move
that failed miserably.
