Reno
Hilton World Poker Challenge - Day 18
No
luck today in the $330 limit holdem (about
90 entries). I found a new nemesis, not
sure who he is but he always had a better
hand (JJ vs QQ, KK Vs AA being the two
biggies) and I was gone within 3 hours.
I think he won the event and Jack Fox
came second (or maybe Jack won?), either
way, congrats Jack, I watched you for
a while and you played great.
Tonight
I played in the super-sat again, they
had a near record 5 tables, gave away
two seats and money for the next 3 places.
I played well but when the blinds started
getting big (300-600) I made my move UTG
with half my chips (1600) with AT, got
called by 99 in the SB, and called all-in
the 678 flop with my remaining 1500. Was
that a wise move? I don't know but with
1500 to get through the 300 and 600 blinds
I thought calling was a better choice,
and blinds were about to go to 500-1000.
An
interesting situation arose with three
left. They were trying to make a deal,
but the rule is that if you already have
a seat you get the 5K in cash, otherwise
you have to take the seat. So the chip
leader 'A' already had a seat, the second
chip leader 'B' didn't want one, and the
third guy 'C' didn't have one and wanted
one. They were all fairly close in chips
and the blinds were about to make it a
crap shoot - there were 70,000 chips in
play, blinds were going to 4000-2000.
Places were 1) seat + 300, 2) seat + 300
3) 1700. A was willing to give up some
money but C wasn't (because he would have
to take the seat, so would need to come
up with money out of his own pocket to
pay off B). B wanted them to both come
up with 1K (so he would get 1700+1K +
1K), not an unreasonable request, but
unworkable given C's situation, so the
only deal he could get was an extra 1K
from A. So they played on, the blinds
went out of control and they ended up
just shoving in their stacks every hand.
C got busted with AJ against B's AQ two
hands later so ended up with just the
1700.
Tomorrow is the start of the main event,
the 5K No Limit. It may have less than
30 players, they are going to start at
2pm, play down to the final table, then
come back the next day at 2pm. There were
big behind the scenes debates on what
they would do if all the players knocked
each other out early and wanted to finish
in one day. I suggested the obvious solution
of invoking a 'no raising' rule, but no
one listens to me.
Also
tomorrow is a $120 + rebuy (or rebuys?)
evening limit holdem event, I'll be playing
in that to try to end on an up note.
At
midnight Linda Johnson and Amarillo Slim
were still going at it in there Omaha
hi-lo freezeout. I watched for a while,
an exciting moment occurred when Slim
took a deep breath so was unable to talk
for a few seconds, Linda took the opportunity
to raise his blind.
