WSOP
2003 Day 9 & 10
Wheeling and Dealing
Yesterday
I finally took my car for walkies, it's
been sitting patiently in the car park
since I got here. The occasion was that
I bumped into Mike Sexton who was on his
way home to watch the Lucky Chances WPT,
I have never seen one because my cable
company doesn't carry Travel Channel (I
guess their reasoning is that we might
watch it then go on vacation, cutting
into their ad revenues). Anyway, Mike
kindly invited me over to watch, so I
followed him over to his house in my car,
and got to see my first WPT, with the
TV announcer sitting right in the same
room! I thought the show was fantastic,
a perfect blend of poker for us hard core
poker junkies, while keeping it exciting
enough for non players to enjoy. Mike
told me that Travel Channel viewing has
been huge, they definitely want another
season, and the show could even end up
on the networks.
Then
I had to come back to my room to wait
for a business call so never got to play
any satellites or the 11pm event. I got
a sandwich at the deli, they have excellent
corned beef, pastrami, and brisket sandwiches
($6 with potato salad or coleslaw), that
plus a soda is free if you get a comp
using your tournament players card, what
a deal!
Today
was a bit more active, I worked during
the day, then went out with a friend tonight
to the El Cortez, this casino is on the
dark side of downtown, past Neonopolis,
where it starts to feel not quite as safe
at night. But, $20 2lb. lobster dinners
beckoned, so we just had to take the risk.
The place was like a nice coffee shop,
the lobsters were surprisingly excellent.
Then
it was back to Binions where I played
two $275 no limit satellites. In the first
I went out to Kathy Liebert after I limped
UTG with 87s, 4 callers, flop was 56 of
my suit, plus an 8, now that's a flop!
Kathy checked, I bet 300, all folded to
Kathy who check-raised grrrr me all in
with her 85o, I called and ighn.
On
to the next satellite, now this one was
funny. I got heads up, he had me outchipped
5-3 and offered a deal where he would
take 3 chips ($500 each) + the $150 cash,
to my 2 chips. I said no, so then I said
how about we just save a chip each. So
he said how about we save two chips each.
A millisecond later I had saved two chips,
so now I had the same deal I'd just turned
down, except now I was playing for the
extra $650 too! Which I lost when I went
for it with a flush draw.
Upstairs
and time to get in late for the 11pm tourney.
I was doing OK but when the blinds went
to 100-200, 25 ante, I only had 1200 left.
One guy limped, which he had done the
hand earlier with KK, I decided to go
for it and re-raised all-in with my AQs.
Apparently he had forgotten to turn in
his KK from the last hand, and ighn.
Numbers
are way down in the main events, but way
up in the 11pm event. I expect things
will pick up when we get back to some
of the cheaper ($1,500-$2,000) events
scheduled for the beginning of May. I
haven't heard anything about the chip
discrepancy mentioned on rgp, I'll try
to find out what that was about.
I
am going to sweat my buddy Diego at the
final table tomorrow of the 1/2 stud,
1/2 holdem (he lost a big pot with 10
players left but then masterfully played
his short stack to get into the money),
then I'm going to play another satellite
or two to try to get enough to play the
$2,500 Limit Holdem on Sunday, if I don't
get lucky then my next event and first
bracelet will be in the $1,500 Limit Holdem
on May 1st. Why do I keep setting myself
up like this!
