STEVEN
LIPSCOMB
FOUNDER AND CEO OF THE WORLD POKER TOUR
As
an experienced poker player and aficionado,
Steven Lipscomb certainly knows a good
hand when he sees one. Recognizing the
huge and as-yet untapped audience-base
for the nation's most popular card game
(with over 100 million poker players worldwide),
Lipscomb conceived of the World Poker
Tour, of which he is founder and CEO.
An
accomplished producer and award-winning
film producer/director, Lipscomb has collaborated
with such luminaries as Al Burton, Norman
Lear and Alvin Toffer, to create and develop
numerous successful films and television
shows, gaining his reputation as a provocative
and offbeat filmmaker who truly has his
finger on the pulse of contemporary culture.
Steven
Lipscomb has just produced two seasons
of "Turn Ben Stein On" for Comedy Central
and a pilot of "Beyond Futureshock", a
future news show for Anticipa LLC. His
films include the critically acclaimed
"Greg Ford For Congress, A Home Movie",
"Shut Up And Drive", a pilot for the USA
network starring Mojo Nixon, and the award
winning "Battle For The Minds" which PBS
selected from over 800 films for its prestigious
independent movie showcase "Point Of View".
His films have received numerous distinctions,
including the "CINE Golden Eagle Award",
a "Golden Apple" from NEMA, and many film
festival awards.
Lipscomb
has a wealth of experience filming pro-poker.
In 1999, he produced and directed "On
the Inside of The World Series of Poker"
for the Discovery channel (one of the
network's top twenty ratings for the year),
and went on to supervise the event for
2000. Last year he won a satellite and
actually played in the WSOP, and also
found time to film the 2001 Tournament
of Champions of Poker. Just prior to the
WPT launch, Lipscomb created and executive-produced
"Cruisin' to a Million" for the Travel
Channel, a program showcasing a million
dollar poker tournament held on a cruise
ship in the Mexican Riviera.
Lipscomb's
background is as varied as his interests.
Formerly an attorney with Gibson, Dunn,
& Crutcher, he received his BA with honors
from Dartmouth College, where he was president
of his class, and his JD from the University
of Chicago, where he was a Greenberg Scholar.
He sold his own attorney referral business
to fund his first film. A native of Knoxville,
Tennessee, he was also involved in legitimate
and improvisational theater, in New Hampshire,
New York and Los Angeles.
