Luxor Poker Room Info
By Kyle Wick
Luxor poker room features low limit Holdem games and very rapid tournaments with a low starting chip total. The tournaments are designed to get started and finish as quickly as possible. The room is not really a room, but a marked off area of the casino floor. The players have a high makeup of locals, as the comps are some of the best in Las Vegas. There are also enough tourists that the games can be beat by a good player if they can withstand the suck outs and miracle draws associated with low limit poker. The tournaments are spread often throughout the week and are very quickly decided due to the low starting stacks.
The management is friendly, but very busy as they do get a lot of play since the room is near a high traffic area. The waitresses are ok, but not as fast as you see in other poker rooms. The comps are generous for those that want to spend some time each week in a poker room. The Luxor does offer bad beat jackpots and high hand bonuses.
The spread of games include the following: Holdem and NL Holdem. The blinds start at 2 to 4 and they go up to 4-8 in limit Holdem games. The NL game is 1 to 2 blinds with a $50 minimum buy-in. At this time they do not offer Omaha or any of the mixed games that are starting to be the rage. The reviews by players are spotty and depend on whether a tourists or a local wrote it. The high comp program seems to grab many of the locals. The low starting chip count for the tournaments was a bone of contention by some of the players.
They do offer special room rates to poker players for off days in Las Vegas. Off days in Las Vegas are usually Sunday through Thursday nights. The tournament schedule is very active and the room is usually sold out for the tournaments. The low limit games attract a lot of new players and therefore get bull tables routinely.
The pyramid shape of the building gives the rooms at the Luxor a slant, which is kind of cool until you, hit your head looking out the window. The rooms are decent and they do have special rates on the Internet. As with any Las Vegas room rental make sure you reserve early for big weekends or you will pay top prices when reserving late.
The Luxor has a nice selection of restaurants that have competitive menus and dining choices. There are several shows to see and the atmosphere of the Luxor follows it Egyptian theme.
The overall rating of the poker room is that it is a fair place for new players to get their feet wet. If all they want to play is Holdem. If a player wants to try a tournament the one thing that you can count on at the Luxor is a quick tournament. The low starting stack size guarantees that the tournament will be fast and not take up a lot of time. Some of the reviews stated it was more of a crapshoot than a real NL Holdem tournament. The basic reason to play there is two fold. The comps are great if you are in town for a week or so. The second reason is there are usually full tables of Holdem and the player mix is not as tough as you would find at some of the larger poker rooms. The basic message is give it a try and if you are happy then you have found a place to play poker.
